Biomechanical Constraints on the Control of Endpoint Stiffness

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Humans regulate arm mechanics to allow for stable interactions with the environment across a broad range of tasks. Understanding how this regulation occurs is an essential problem in motor control. The steady state mechanical properties of the arm can be characterized by endpoint stiffness, the relationship between externally applied displacements of the hand and the steady state forces generated in response [1]. Endpoint stiffness is directional, resisting perturbations in certain directions more than others [1, 2]. The ability to modulate the orientation of maximum stiffness provides a mechanism for tuning arm mechanics to the requirements of a specific task. However, there are conflicting results regarding how much voluntary control exists over the orientation of maximum stiffness [2, 3].

متن کاملTitle: A Modelling Perspective on the Role of Biomechanics on Motor Decision-Making
Recent work has shown that human subjects are able to predict the biomechanical ease and the cost of controlling the endpoint stability of potential reaching movements and to use these predictions to influence their choices between reaching movements. Here we review related experimental results in which human subjects made free choices between two potential reaching movements that varied in ter...
متن کاملMuscle Synergies Heavily Influence the Neural Control of Arm Endpoint Stiffness and Energy Consumption
Much debate has arisen from research on muscle synergies with respect to both limb impedance control and energy consumption. Studies of limb impedance control in the context of reaching movements and postural tasks have produced divergent findings, and this study explores whether the use of synergies by the central nervous system (CNS) can resolve these findings and also provide insights on mec...

Objective: Stiffness is a characteristic of viscoelastic structures and is an effective factor in sports movement biomechanics, which is an important factor in motion production and neuromechanical control of human body. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between lower extremity stiffness and selected biomechanical variables during vertical jumps. Methods: 20 male physi...
